Navigating Life's Storms

This past Christmas break I decided to take a little trip up north with my son. Snacks packed, hotel booked, itinerary created. What I didn’t plan for was the drive itself.

At one point, the fog was so thick I could barely see past the front of the car. I knew where we were headed, but the road in front of me felt uncertain and honestly it was very nerve wracking. I couldn’t see far ahead, so I focused on the guiding lines on the road. One moment at a time. One steady breath after another.

Later in the trip, we hit a full on snowstorm. Visibility dropped. Roads were slick. Everything slowed way down. And yet, we still had somewhere to go. A trampoline park, because if you’re stuck somewhere snowy, you might as well let a kid bounce it out.

This time, the lesson felt different. I knew I couldn’t rush. I had to drive slower, breathe deeper, and stay present. No forcing it. No fighting the storm. Just adjusting to the conditions and trusting myself to move forward safely.

When I reflected on both moments, they felt like perfect metaphors for life.

Hard seasons often feel like fog or storms. We know where we want to be. We know what we’re working toward. But the path to get there is unclear. We wonder how long this will last. When things will ease up. If we’re even moving in the right direction.

And the truth is, when you’re in it, it’s hard. The unknown is uncomfortable. Progress feels slow. Visibility is limited.

But just like driving through fog, you don’t need to see the whole road. You just need to stay focused on what’s directly in front of you. And just like a snowstorm, sometimes the answer isn’t to push harder. It’s to slow down, breathe, and take care of yourself while you keep going.

Whatever hardship you might be facing right now, I hope this reminds you of a few things.

Take it one day at a time. Find small moments of peace, light, or joy wherever you can. Trust that you’re still moving forward, even if it doesn’t feel dramatic or fast.

Until the storm passes, be gentle with yourself and keep going.
